Live From New York
March 2004
Such was the case with the opener of Juan Tizol's "Caravan", in which Weston's momentum-carrying structural play around the tune's moving rhythm made room for the at-first hesitant Kendrick. Their give and take, here and throughout the evening, was much more successful than their collective performance, as the younger Kendrick played with a guitar-like approach in his runs trying to play over Weston (as there was no way to play under Weston's inherently provided bass grooves). Much more about direction than note-to-note precision, Kendrick waited for opportune occasions to solo within Weston's context, noticeably to avoid becoming an obstacle. The elder of the two played with a confidence that hasmade him quite simply one of jazz' living masters. Towards the end of the evening, a more comfortable Kendrick met Weston on common ground for Weston's "Hi-Fly", whose simple catchy theme has become a recognizable jazz standard.
