Happy 104th birthday, Satchmo!

Beating the heat was easy to do at Le Richelieu, the elegant yet friendly French Quarter hotel that played gracious host to a couple of out-of-town writers covering the festival. A dip in the hotel pool was just the tonic before we set out for the nightly rounds of clubs in search of still more music.

We visited Snug Harbor to hear piano phenom Jonathan Batiste. Another night, it was off Uptown to the Maple Leaf for drummer extraordinaire John Vidacovich, playing with bass legend George Porter Jr. and blues-rock guitarist Anders Osborne. We closed out our stay at Donna's, where another exceptional drummer, Shannon Powell, fronted a quartet and welcomed a parade of drop-by guests to join in.

I'd rhapsodize on about the food, but I'm out of room. Meals alone are worth the visit. And as one musician advised the sweltering crowd: "Keep hydrated. And drink lots of water, too."
