While Storyville is certainly home to those players with instant name recognition, they also are the foremost purveyor of lesser known, but just as significant, Scandinavian jazz artists. If you have never heard Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, then you are missing one of the greatest bassists of all time and his recent passing has left a void that will not be filled. Storyville's The Bass in the Background is a 30-year retrospective of NHØP's brilliant career as a sideman for a who's who of jazz including pianists Powell and Teddy Wilson and saxophonists Webster, Gordon and Coleman Hawkins.
Recently, Storyville was purchased by Edition Wilhelm Hansen, part of The Music Sales Group. It thus far appears that this will portend well for the label. Plans are in the works for completely digitizing the massive catalogue and increasing distribution through online sales of all CDs. Taking its name from the infamous section of New Orleans that was home to jazz during its earliest days, Storyville Records, as it has for over 50 years, continues to be this music's home away from home.
