Rob Reid: The Beaches Sessions (2004)
Rob Reid makes his instrumental guitar debut with the introspective The Beaches Sessions. Reid's guitar work has previous been associated with Pierre Chaisson's Riverside and Cape Breton Gospel w/ Pierre Chaisson of Grace Unlimited Music. The setting found Reid serving up a platter jazzy/rock inflected guitar lines just like fresh hot cakes. Always the searching soul, Reid’s musical insight and jazz training have led him ever forward. The decision to branch out from the band format and try his hands at a solo instrumental career is a logical choice on his part. He remains true to his vision of right standing in his faith and presents the open listener with an EP of succinct Christian arrangements. Make no mistake, however, for this is an accessible recording for both Christian and heathen alike. One need not be of a particular denomination or faith to enjoy this impressive guitarist's instrumental take on modern hymns.
Reid starts out with the funky walking bass lines of "Change My Heart Oh God," leading into the gentle pastoral soundscapes of “Seek Ye First.” He finishes with the truly dynamic range of “Oh Lord Have Mercy On Us.” Starting slowly and as gentle as a newborn lamb, the piece moves increasingly forward through a plethora of delicate chord changes before Reid takes off to glory. It is a real highlight of this young guitarist’s capabilities and arranging skills. The Beaches sessions will have old enthusiasts and new listeners eager for more of the same.
Mr. Reid is currently on an Eastern Canadian tour. He is backed Mugs By Color and the murky, malicious melodies of Violent Lila.
