Setting the Tempo

By Published: March 4, 2004

This need was most acute for me when I read George Avakian's description of the audience's response and the musicians' response in return during the Ellington band's performance of Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue at the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival. I was absolutely delighted, therefore, when I came up on an inexpensive, good condition copy of the original LP at a record show during the time I was reading Setting the Tempo. I raced home, queued-up the record, sat down in a comfortable chair with my feet up and began to listen to the Ellington band as I read (again) George Avakian's wonderful liner notes.
