CD/LP/Track Review
Alessandra Belloni: Tarantelle & Canti D (2003)
Rhythmic and sanguine is the contemporary Italian folk music as expressed by Alessandra Belloni and her group. Without surprise, the music is not that different than that provided by Medieval Italian Music specialists such as Acantus. There is nothing particularly balladic about this music. It is sensual and humid, almost gypsy-like in its abandon. All of this music is delivered with the reverb of the 14th and 15th Centuries.
This is not the music of the Gabrieli or Scarlatti families, nor later of the Pergolesies, the Puccinis, or the Roussinis. This is populist music devoid of all classical pretenses. It is full of love, sex, war, peace, pathos, and ethos. I recommend this recording to all Italanophiles, old and new in their respective sensibilities. It will certainly entertain all.
