CD/LP/Track Review
Will Holshouser Trio: Reed Song (2003)
Accordionist Will Holshouser utilizes his instrument in ways that may seem foreign, yet comparatively innovative, to the willing listener. With his jazz-based trio, also featuring drummer/percussionist Kevin Norton performing on two pieces, the leader melds the sounds of a Paris cabaret with jazzy grooves, shuffle boogies, roots music and more. Trumpeter Ron Horton and bassist David Phillips often engage in radiant and at times playful soloing escapades as the trio mixes it up rather nicely throughout this spirited program.
However, the bottom line equates to the overriding fun factor element. Simply stated, Holshouser and associates are having a blast! The group incorporates a broad genre base into its stock and trade. Moreover, Norton adds a little punch and pizzazz on two pieces - where the band ventures into swing vamps and bluesy episodes. On “Sparkle Of Never,” Holshouser executes bouncy lines to coincide with moderately paced swing pulses and Mediterranean-like motifs. Meanwhile, Horton and Phillips provide a strong counterattack via peppery soloing endeavors and capricious frameworks. No doubt, Holshouser brings a lot to the table. Hearing is believing! (Strongly recommended...)
