The Dave Brubeck Quartet live Take Four, Five And More! - The Best of the Dave Brubeck Quartet

It's 2001 and for little more than an hour, the Jazzopen in Stuttgart -soaked in audience- is the playground for Dave Brubeck's youthful old hands at play. EuroArts films this concert with their usual expertise, thus preserving quite a deserving presentation from a jazz rugged figure. They did take Four, Five and a bit More on that night as four gray haired veterans made short with a repertoire and performance that could hardly be anything else but a delight.

Dave Brubeck in piano, Randy Jones, sticking the drums, Bobby Militello in alto saxophone and flute, the bass at Michael Moore's mercy and the multi-camera shots, amenable lighting and judicious editing bare this production well. Of course, when a production company counts with a musician's and performer's feel and conceptualization in the direction of such an event, thereupon ensues filmic gifting.

In case you are still wondering, the musical performance itself is worth watching repeatedly for whatever reasons one might muster. Everyone's rendering of a panoramic selection associated to the group's distinguished career is as light-hearted, delicious, deep, sure-footed, imaginative and swinging as desired. The live concert's recorded track is superb, as the Brubeck Quartet was on that occasion, as well as the venue's acoustics.

One can't go wrong with this opportunity to live Brubeck'

Performances of 'I Got Rhythm'-George Gershwin, 'St. Louis Blues'-W.C. Handy, 'These Foolish Things'-Jack Strachey & Harry Link, 'The Crossing'-Dave Brubeck, 'All My Love'-Dave Brubeck, 'Why Not?'-Dave Brubeck, 'Theme For June'-Howard Brubeck, 'Yesterdays'-Jerome Kern, 'Over The Rainbow'-Harold Arlen, 'Take Five'-Paul Desmond, 'Unsquare Dance'-Dave Brubeck.
