Various Artists: One More: The Summary: Music Of Thad Jones, Vol. 2
ByThe Jones brotherspianist Hank, trumpeter Thad and drummer Elvinhave all brought greatness to the jazz world through their hard work and natural affinity for quality. Through the years, Thad Jones served as a role model for many and co-led a vibrant big band with drummer Mel Lewis. His earlier nine-year tenure with the Count Basie Orchestra forever identified Jones as a representative of that unique sound. This album captures the essence and serves as a guide to his music.
Fortunately, Ira Gitler's liner notes explain in detail which of the four tenor saxophonists stretches out and where, giving the listener a thorough understanding of their individual interpretative differences. Each of these veteran artists is in fine form for their homage. The album's title track, "The Summary, closes an otherwise upbeat session with somber reflections from Hank Jones and James Moody as a piano/tenor saxophone duo. Together, they celebrate a life that brought us many good tunes and a lifetime supply of the jazz spirit.
