CD REVIEWS AND ARTICLE HIGHLIGHTS

April was another extraordinary month in which we once again published nearly 200 CD reviews. Our diligent staff of writers chipped in with CD reviews, extended analysis reviews and multiple reviews.

We featured some superb cover stories this month, including: Cyril Moshkow's Quickie Guide to Jazz Festivals in Eastern Europe, Russ Musto's profile of Sam Rivers, and Glenn Astarita's profile of Jeff Gauthier & Cryptogramophone Records.

As always, AAJ brings you up close and personal with today's jazzers of note. This month we chatted with Dave Douglas, Mark Whitecage, John O'Gallagher, Brad Mehldau, Toots Thielemans, Jackie Ryan, and Ted Sirota.

NEW MUSICIAN CENTER

We re-launched our jazz musician center last week with several new features. If you're a jazz musician and are currently not listed, please add your profile today. If you are listed and would like to update your profile, click the "Update..." link on the Musician Center home page.

There are nearly 800 musicians already in our database, all searchable by name, record label, instrument, or style.

Here are a handful of musicians you can currently find listed in the AAJ directory: Bill Bruford, Roy Campbell, John O'Gallagher, Mimi Fox, and Irvin Mayfield.

TAKE A JAZZY VACATION WITH AAJ

Planning to attend a jazz festival this year? Let All About Jazz plan your trip. The new AAJ Jazz Traveler program offers packages to ten different jazz destinations, including Caribbean events like the Jazz Cruise and the Puerto Rico Heineken JazzFest. We play an active role in developing and customizing each vacation package, with the goal of keeping costs down and maximizing your access to the music. Regardless of your plans, take a moment to fill out our survey so we can learn more about your needs.

APRIL FOOLISHNESS

This month marked a particularly foolish highpoint when we published eleven CD reviews, three news items, and two book reviews--as an April 1 prank. Amazingly enough, a lot of people actually took this material at face value; we found two of our news items elsewhere online, including a posthumous booking of the late piano great Bill Evans on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.

BULLETIN BOARD FUN

Speaking of fun, you don't have to be a jazz aficionado to enjoy the AAJ bulletin board. If you're a first-timer, start with any one of these three topics: AAJ's mission, rehabbing smooth jazzers, and yoga, Top 10 Things To Do If You Win The Lottery, and the Worst Special Effects Of All Time.

COMING IN MAY

Look for a new and improved history of jazz timeline, a jazz birthday system, and a new article/cd review search engine next month. Till then...

All the best,

Mike, Chris, Nils and the entire All About Jazz Staff
