Steam Powered Preservation Society: A New Twist on Old Tunes

Perennial bluegrass insider and luthier Tut Taylor's tape recordings, numbering over 500 in total, captured some of the legends of the American acoustic music scene. This collection spawned the creation of The Steam Powered Preservation Society, a nonprofit (501c3) organization whose mission is to archive, save, research and share historic Americana recordings.

To further this mission, the SPPS is pleased to announce a new website that will make this music even more accessible. These amazing recordings are available on the site as individual mp3s, zip files of shows in their entirety, and lossless flacs. The collection features artists like Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, Jimmy Martin, John Hartford Aeroplane Band and The Osborne Brothers, just to scratch the surface of the archives. The SPPS is in the midst of digitizing a stellar second collection to add to this invaluable public library of music. Only unlike most libraries, feel free to holler as much as you want!

But SPPS also supports those musicians keeping the music alive today. Partner bands to the project include Uncle Earl, The Infamous Stringdusters, Hot Buttered Rum, The Mammals, Two High String Band, Boulder Acoustic Society and Spring Creek, just to name a few, whose live shows are also available on the site.

In this ever-evolving, exciting acoustic scene, SPPS is seeking to grow as a vital link between the past and the future. With that in mind, the site is on the lookout for:

-More archives to digitize
-Writers for the SPPS blog
-Tapers to record partner bands at shows
-New partner bands (see website for guidelines)

As John Hartford sang, “A lot of good things went down one time/Back in the goodle days." Those “goodle days" are captured here at The Steam Powered Preservation Society.
