Sanofi-aventis Jazzfest 2009 to salute Benny Goodman on June 6 at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey
MADISON, NJ -- The metropolitan areas only major main stream jazz festival this summer will take place on the campus of Drew University in Madison, New Jersey on June 5 and 6 featuring a celebration of the centennial of Benny Goodman's birth with the Allan Vache Benny Goodman Tribute Big Band. Joining Vache will be his brother Warren, Terry Blaine, Randy Reinhart, Tom Artin, Mark Shane, Joe Ascione and other great swing musicians. The Benny Goodman Tribute Big Band is one of the official bands approved by the great clarinetists estate.
The festival begins with a free concert on Friday night and then ten hours of nonstop music on Saturday, running from noon and 10:00 PM. In addition to a tribute to the King of Swing, the New Jersey Jazz Society will present the hot jazz of Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, the Brazilian jazz of Trio da Paz and the bop sounds of tenor star Houston Person Quartet throughout the afternoon.
In the evening, three groups take the main stage with the Rio Clemente Trio and vocalist Laura Hull kicking things followed by jazz singer Curtis Stigers and the exciting big band of Sherrie Maricle and the DIVA Jazz Orchestra.
The sanofi-aventis Jazzfest co-sponsored by RXR will also feature great food all day on Saturday, including a special Southern Barbecue, sales of rare CDs and vinyl records, and many craft and retail vendors. The festival is also made possible by the generous support of corporations and local organizations, including JazzMobile, Madison Downtown Development Commission, the Madison Arts & Culture Alliance, Toyota of Morristown, WBGO Jazz88FM and JazzTimes Magazine. The Best Western Morristown Inn is the official festival hotel and offers a special discount room rate for attendees of the festival. The Morristown Inn is located just two miles from the Drew campus in historic Morristown.
