Old Music, Via New Technology

The Sag Harbor-based filmmaker Joe Lauro knows there is no shortage of time-tested music to be heard, and seen, on TV.

As the president of Historic Films Archive, a stock-footage film library specializing in music from 1922 to 2000, Mr. Lauro has even packaged and rebroadcast some of it; his film “The Howlin' Wolf Story" appeared recently on the Starz network, for instance. But some opportunities to see clips of famous musicians warrant leaving the living room sofa behind, he said.

“When you have a huge screen and the sound is awesome, it can be like a concert where youre seeing people in their prime," Mr. Lauro, 54, said in a recent phone interview.

That will be the case beginning May 22 in Sag Harbor, Mr. Lauro said, when the Bay Street Theater begins a four-part program called “The Legends Series."

Mr. Lauro said the series was his idea. “I live close by, and I love what they do there, he said. So I said, 'Hey, guys, why don't I put together certain thematic nights of music? I'll cull the material from our archives, and well make it appeal to anybody whos a fan of mus'"
