Kirk's new Crowd Sonics" are compositions for the whole jazz club. First, featured artists will perform selections from the Nurock songbook, including jazz settings of Emily Dickinson. Then, club- goers will be invited to chant, riff and murmur. All is voluntary, so feel free to just sit back and listen. At the finale, soloists and crowd will interact in a celebratory, contrapuntal improvisation.
Crowd sonics" is the latest chapter in Nurock's exploration of neo- primitive vocal sound. In 1971, he founded the Natural Sound Workshop. Called pioneering" by the New York Times, his compositions explored the myriad sounds of untrained voices. In the 1980's, fascinated by Darwinian theory, he created cross-species works in which improvisers Jane Ira Bloom and Robert Dick dialoged with live animals. Nurock orchestrated for Leonard Bernstein, Dizzy Gillespie and Meredith Monk. A Juilliard graduate, he is on the composition faculty of the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music.
