Music Festival Jazzes Up Recycling Efforts

Turning Green is easier with three simple ways to recycle, includes six economic & environmental benefits

ST. LOUIS, Missouri - September 6, 2008 -- Jazz and blues fans struggling to see the benefits of recycling can learn how to make a difference with “Three Simple Ways to Recycle" later this month during the Old Webster Jazz & Blues Festival on Saturday, September 20, 2008.

Three Ways to Recycle
Proactive music festivals that want to lure energy conscious music fans and their families, are using strategies that would have been unheard of 30 years ago. They include offering visitors a two bin system - labeled for recyclables and non-recyclables, festival flyers with a recycle logo to designate they are recyclable, and encouraging visitors buy materials with recycled content to ensure recycling really works.

The jazz and blues festival will debut 30 trash cans and 30 recyclable containers, designed to encourage music fans to drop their plastic bottles and aluminum cans in designated bins as they groove to the music. Each bin will feature signage so festival visitors know what can be placed within. The Cellular One and Fifth Third Bank stages will feature public service announcements from jazz and blues celebrities performing at the 8th Annual Old Webster Jazz & Blues Festival.

“Combining our family-friendly, educational festival with recycling is a natural; it's our children who will inherit our habits," said festival chairman Joe Rath. Rath stressed that young people are valuable partners in encouraging recycling. Rath added, “the community effort to reduce, reuse, and recycle is good news for both the environment and our residents."

According to the National Recycling Coalition, six (6) economic and environmental recycling benefits are:

  • Recycling Helps Families Save Money
  • Recycling Creates 1.1 Million U.S. Jobs
  • Recycling Conserves Natural Resources
  • Recycling Reduces Greenhouse Gas Emissions
  • Recycling Can Help Reduce Toxic Emissions in Half from Processing Minerals
  • Recycling Prevents Habitat Destruction

The eco-friendly Webster Groves community extends a helping hand to encourage visitors to hop on the green bandwagon, recycle and make a difference. In August, Webster Groves was named one of “Ten Best Towns for Families: 2008" by Family Circle Magazine. The magazine noted 57% of the city's residents recycle and its single stream curbside recycling program.

The Old Webster Jazz & Blues Festival was founded by its taxing district in 2001 to help promote music and culture in the Old Webster Groves Historic District. In its effort to embrace the green concept, the festival acknowledges welcome support from the City of Webster Groves, Waste Management, The Webster- Kirkwood Times, KTRS 550 AM, and Classic 99.1 FM.
