The Greatest Rocksteady Event Ever Seen!
The Festival International de Jazz de Montreal is thrilled to invite fans to the Grande soire XM Radio Satellite, a free outdoor Rocksteady megaconcert live from the General Motors stage on Tuesday, July 7, 9 p.m. Forty years after its birth, the greatest names in the genre, including Ken Boothe, Stranger Cole, Hopeton Lewis, Leroy Sibbles and The Tamlins, as well as Marcia Griffiths, Judy Mowatt-who were featured backup singers for Bob Marley-reunite to take us on a trip through time with such legendary hits as “Rivers of Babylon," “The Tide Is High" and “Stop That Train." Rocksteady’s greatest headliners had already been assembled for the music documentary Rocksteady: The Roots of Reggae, produced by Muse Entertainment of Montreal and presented in a major world premiere at the Muse d’art contemporain from July 4 to 12 with four screenings every day. And the Festival had the bright idea to reunite them… for real, live onstage! Welcome the spectacular return of the original spearheads of pure Rocksteady, in the all-new Place des Festivals!
What is Rocksteady? A blend of ska, North American soul and R&B, this Jamaican sound was all the rage just before the advent of reggae. The documentary Rocksteady: The Roots of Reggae, traces its history and reunites the last great singers and musicians of the golden age of this soulful, rhythmic music. Four decades after its peak, the voices and instruments of the veterans of Rocksteady were reassembled a final time to record a greatest hits album, perform live, and tell their stories in Stascha Bader’s documentary… and we’ve invited them to fire up the party, live onstage! The originators of reggae reunite right in the middle of this 30th edition of the Festival for what’s certain to be the greatest Rocksteady event ever seen!
Rocksteady: The Roots of Reggae features recording sessions in Jamaica’s legendary Tuff Gong Studios, archival footage from the era, and interviews with the aforementioned artists, as well as singers Dawn Penn, Derrick Morgan and U-Roy, musicians Ernest Ranglin, Sly Dunbar, Jackie Jackson, Gladstone Anderson, Hux Brown and Scully Simms, and special guest Rita Marley.
Tickets for daily documentary screenings (original English version at 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.; French subtitled version at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.-with occasional exceptions) now on sale on-site at the Muse d’art contemporain or by telephone every day from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.: 514-847-6212. From July 4 to 12, during period of film screenings, tickets may be purchased until 9 p.m.
