Feeling Neighborly on Bluegrass

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. YANKEES aren't supposed to know country music from a hole in the ground. But on Tuesday nights, not a mile from Harvard, the grass grows blue at the Cantab Lounge.

This dive bar in Central Square is the home for local and traveling bluegrass pickers alike. But it draws mostly non-musicians who flirt, chatter, hoot and holler under the glow of a scratch-ticket lottery machine and a net of Christmas lights. “It's a classic Cambridge atmosphere where you have locals seemingly coexisting peacefully with internationals and Harvard students," said Larry Mahl, 25, who was ignoring the evening's featured band, Jerks of Grass. Sure, there were some of the graybeards one might expect. “Hot girls and old men," said Rachel Weidenfeld, 26, summarizing the scene.
