Now more than ever, people are ready to break the mundane cycles we endure everyday. Whether it be long hours at work, school, trying to take care of our bodies, or signing into zoom for the fifth time today, these stresses cause even the strongest willed individuals to fear waking up wondering “what was it all for?” During the initial Covid-19 quarantine in 2020, David Bernot set a goal to break the monotony in his own life and record a debut album of original jazz music with an all-star ensemble of his mentors and friends in Denver, Colorado. The album’s title track aptly named Never-Ending Cycle is about the aforementioned mundanity we all experience in life, and our human will to experience fulfillment despite it.

2022 is a very special year for David to be releasing his first studio record, as it marks 10 years living and studying music in Denver, Colorado. Originally from the town of Gilbert, Arizona, David moved to Denver at the age of 18 to study at the University of Denver. David was accepted with open arms by the jazz community in Denver as a teenager in 2012 and has since played with many of the local jazz staples throughout his time there. Throughout this time he has studied, practiced and performed music of many genres, while his passion has always remained for improvised music. Never-Ending Cycle is a culmination of all of David’s experiences while living and performing in the Mile High City and includes a collection of original compositions written throughout the past decade.

David’s music is a sweet medley of the modern sensibilities of players like Joshua Redman and Chris Potter, and a callback to more classic jazz ensembles, such as Miles Davis’ Second Quintet and Joe Henderson. The title track “Never-Ending Cycle” is an explosive modern modal take featuring experimentation in form and modern jazz harmony. Meanwhile, the track “Melody For Wayne” is dedicated to the jazz waltz stylings of the saxophone legend Wayne Shorter.

Never-Ending Cycle was recorded in June 2021 with a top shelf Denver ensemble featuring Greg Gisbert on trumpet, Tom Amend on piano, Gonzalo Teppa on bass and Michael D’Angelo on drums. The band’s compliment’s David’s vision both live and in the studio with stunning flexibility and creative energy. From Greg’s fiery trumpet improvisations, to Tom’s sensitivity to the moment, to Gonzalo’s sturdy foundation and musicality, and Michael’s undeniable control of both his instrument and the ensemble, the band members create an ensemble sound that is fresh yet grounded in the spirit and traditions of improvised music.

Never-Ending Cycle is released in partnership with Nocturne Jazz & Supper Club, located in Denver's RiNo Arts District.
