This will be the first project for the Broken Reed Saxophone Quartet (BRSQ) with lyrics! This Brooklyn-based group is directed by composer and alto saxophonist Charley Gerard with Jenny Hill, Jacob Teichroew and Dimitri Moderbacher filling out the quartet. Kristin Slipp, an immensely talented singer with the group Cuddle Magic, is performing the work along with the BRSQ at a concert at IBeam on February 6. The concert will be recorded and the music will be on the BRSQ's next CD. Each song takes the listener through pain and pleasure, alternatively with a comic or dramatic effect. Composer Charley Gerard found inspiration in poems by America’s barroom poet-laureate Charles Bukowski and an uncompleted song lyric by Woody Guthrie. The other poems were written by Judith Weinstock, Mitch Levenberg, Carole Langile and Leslie Prosterman.
The artistry and talent of the individual members of the Broken Reed Saxophone Quartet have been heard during appearances at the Juilliard School, the Blue Note Jazz Club, the Kennedy Center and jazz festivals around the globe, performing with Aretha Franklin, Norah Jones, the Diva Big Band and Washington Musica Viva. They have received rave reviews from the Washington Post and Saxophone Journal. As a group, the Broken Reed Saxophone Quartet has performed in NY, CT, NJ, MD and toured the Burgenland region of Austria. Their music has been broadcast on TV and radio. The group was chosen by Lincoln Center Institute to be included in their Emblem Series of NYC area school performances for 2012-3. They launched a successful Kickstarter campaign in December. 2013 to fund a live recording of George Handy's New York Suite.
