Canon to Buy '.Canon' in New Domain-Name Land Rush

We're entering a brave new era in the world of domain acquisition. After decades of hampering the creation of new top-level domains, the ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), the international body that governs such things, opted to loosen restrictions. Thus it has opened up the Web to a potential deluge of TLD registration in 2010, when the rules take effect.

Naturally, corporations have seen the opening as a brand-new Internet land grab. And while most have yet to publicly announce their intentions, Canon this week issued a statement announcing that the company is ready to “begin the acquisition process for the top-level domain name '.canon,' based on the new generic Top Level Domain (gTLD) registration system."

Canon expects the approval to occur in the second half of next year.
