As the Jazzschool's Winter 2010 Quarter commences on Monday, January 11, students in the Jazzschool Institute's brand-new four-year Bachelor of Music degree program in Jazz Studies return for their Spring 2010 semester on January 19.

“We have a wonderful group of instrumentalists and vocalists in our entering class," says Founder and Director Susan Muscarella. “They are passionate about the music and committed to a life in and around jazz, and we are so excited to see these plans come to life." (Inquiries about the new program should be addressed to [email protected].)

The Mark Murphy Vocal Jazz Scholarship Fund was established in the fall of 2009, and its first recipient was Jazzschool Institute student Jua Howard. Another Jazzschool Institute scholarship, the Jamey Aebersold Scholarship (in the amount of $10 thousand), has been established by Aebersold, a longtime leader and innovator in jazz education.

Grammy-winning pianist and Jazzschool faculty member Mark Levine is planning to launch the Bay Area Jazz Archives (BAJA) on Jazzschool Records later this month. “BAJA is a unique collection of previously unreleased recordings of the Bay Area's finest jazz artists, from 1970 to 2000," says Levine. “Some of the music is pretty extraordinary, and really should be heard. So we're hoping to get exposure for the music, the artists, and the label." The first release will include titles by David Ginsberg, Linda Goldstein (better known as Bobby McFerrin's manager), Mike Morris, and the band Ellis Island. CDs will be sold in the Jazzschool bookstore and by the artists themselves for $9.

Jazzschool Community Music School Director Rob Ewing announces new classes taught by Alan Hall (The Versatile Drummer), Jon Arkin (The Musical Drummer), Mimi Fox (Guitar Trio), Brian Rice (Samba Pagode Ensemble), Uriah Duffy (Real World Bass), Joe Bagale (Funk, Soul, and R&B Rhythm Section Workout), Frank Martin (The Music of George Duke), and Art Lande (Vocal Spectrum; Musical Expression, Reception, and Communication).

“We're also pleased to offer numerous one-day and short-term workshops," says Ewing. Those would include piano and composition workshops with Michele Rosewoman on 1/23, 1/24, and 1/31; a jazz composition workshop with Todd Sickafoose on 2/14; and a bass workshop with Kai Eckhardt 3/21.

The Jazzschool Vocal Department, under the direction of Laurie Antonioli, has inaugurated a Vocal Jam Session and Showcase one Sunday a month throughout the winter and spring quarters. A Jazzschool Institute vocal student opens each session and serves as emcee for the evening. Jam sessions will take place 1/31, 2/27, 3/28, 4/25, 5/23, and 6/27, from 7:30 to 9:30 pm ($5-$10 sliding scale).

Among the vocal classes being offered this winter: Vocal Technique (Raz Kennedy, Joyce Pricco), Blues Vocal Funshop (Pamela Rose), For the Love of Singing (Faith Winthrop), The Irish Song Tradition (Melanie O'Reilly), Eastern European Songs and Vocal Techniques (Janet Kutulas), A Modern Approach to Singing Latin Standards (Maria Marquez), The Singer and the Song (Maye Cavallaro), Neo-Soul Singing (Ben Flint), and Creative Jazz Singer (Laurie Antonioli).

Ed Reed's 3-part workshop series, “The Jazz Singer," continues with “The Gift" (2/21) and “The Song" (5/1). Kitty Margolis offers a Sunday afternoon workshop on “Demystifying Jazz Singing" 3/14, and Louise Robinson of Sweet Honey in the Rock presides over a Swinging Circles Workshop 4/23.

Concert Preparation and Performance for Vocalists, a customized mentor program supervised by Maye Cavallaro, features three singers per quarter. William Hull, Joe Jakovac, and Lynn Anderson are the designated vocalists this winter; they'll perform in the Jazzschool Concert Series on April 2, 3, and 4, respectively.
