'Soul & Salvation' captures Gillespie in a slamming funk-soul groove alongside such notable players as Joe Newman, Benny Powell, Cornell Dupree, Eddie Pazant, and Grammy Award-winning saxman James Moody.
Liberation Hall has announced archival jazz releases from Cannonball Adderley, Dizzy Gillespie, and Cal Tjader. All titles will arrive in stores May 17 and be distributed by MVD Entertainment Group (USA) and Wienerworld (UK).

The Cannonball Adderley Quintet
Live in Montreal May 1975
(Liberation Hall, 2024)

The great Julian “Cannonball" Adderley rose to prominence in the hard-bop era of the 1950s and 1960s. After a successful stint with Miles Davis’s sextet —including being featured on the seminal Davis records Milestones and Kind of Blue—Adderley formed his own quintet with brother Nat Adderley on trumpet and cornet, and soon became the driving force behind the soul-jazz movement of the ‘60s and ‘70s. No one would have guessed that the 46-year-old DownBeat Jazz Hall of Famer was in the last few months of his life when he stepped on stage at Montreal’s In Concert Club on May 3, 1975. And nothing about the performance suggests that the sax legend was anything but at the top of his game. The lineup for the quintet here is Cannonball Adderley (alto and soprano sax); Nat Adderley (trumpet); Michael Wolff (piano); Roy McCurdy (drums, percussion); and Walter Booker (bass). Out of print since its original 1977 release on Dobre Records, this title now makes its official CD debut alongside a 180-gram vinyl repressing and download. The packages will feature liner notes by music historian Cary Ginell who wrote the book Walk Tall: The Music and Life of Cannonball Adderley. The notes include interviews with quintet members Wolff and McCurdy.

Dizzy Gillespie
Soul & Salvation
(Liberation Hall, 2024)

Dizzy Gillespie was a jazz giant who loved to explore new areas of self-expression. In addition to being an exciting performer, his melodic and harmonic inventions are legendary. Gillespie had remarkable insight into the rhythmic aspects of jazz. His trumpet swung in a highly personal way.

Soul & Salvation captures Gillespie in a slamming funk-soul groove alongside such notable players as Joe Newman, Benny Powell, Cornell Dupree, Eddie Pazant, and Grammy Award-winning saxman James Moody. Out of print for over 15 years in any format, and unavailable on vinyl domestically for nearly half a century, Soul & Salvation is now set to make its return. The album will be released on CD, download, and 180-gram vinyl. The physical formats feature charts and compositions from noted musician/filmmaker Ed Bland, who wrote all the tracks on the LP and co-produced the original sessions in 1969.

Cal Tjader
Huracán
(Liberation Hall, 2023)

Vibraphonist Cal Tjader was a master of Latin rhythms and in his early career played with Dave Brubeck, Lionel Hampton, and George Shearing. As a bandleader, his output spanned over 50 albums and hundreds of concerts. Probably more than any other non-Latin musician, Tjader helped to popularize the fusion of Latin and jazz. For his 1978 album Huracán, four overhead microphones and a direct input for the bass were used to capture the immediacy of the studio sessions. Musicians included percussionists Willie Bobo and Poncho Sanchez, former Frank Zappa sidemen Gary Foster (alto saxophone, flute) and Kurt McGettrick (baritone saxophone), among others. The original 1978 vinyl release was pressed at 45 RPM with two tracks on each side. For this reissue, Liberation Hall has added two bonus tracks to the 180-gram vinyl at 33 RPM. Huracán was released last year on CD and download.
