Annual Newport Beach, CA, Jazz Party Scheduled Feb. 11 Through 14

Big bands and an array of jazz stars will be featured at the 10th Annual Newport Beach Jazz Party, held Feb. 11 through 14, at the Marriott Hotel in Newport Beach, California.

Kicking off the Valentine's/Presidents Day weekend event Thursday night will be Ken Peplowski's Big Band Music of Benny Goodman. Clarinet player Peplowski, an alumnus of Goodman's last band, has put together an assemblage to salute the King of Swing. Also to be on hand opening night are Pat Williams' SINATRALAND Orchestra, conducted by Terry Woodson and featuring Peter Erskine and Michael Dees. They will pay homage to 'Ol Blue Eyes.

Some 50 musicians overall will appear in a variety settings and groupings over the four days: morning jazz brunches, afternoon pool side concerts and evening programs in the hotel's Grand Ballroom. These, in addition to cocktail and after-hours sessions. Fans come from throughout the world, many staying in the hotel, better to immerse themselves in continuous music.

The featured performers Friday evening are vocalist Jackie Ryan, the Heath Bothers Quartet and the Jeff Hamilton Trio. On Saturday evening, the stars will be drummer Lewis Nash and Friends and singer Marlena Shaw, in addition to a Duke Ellington tribute with flutist Holly Hoffman, Byron Stripling and others.

On closing night Sunday, the world renowned Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra is scheduled. Among others on the final program will be singer/songwriter Dave Frishberg. After-hours performers the three nights will include saxophonist Houston Person, pianists Bill Cunliffe and Shelly Berg and guitarist Ron Eshete.
