ARTIST OVERVIEW
Over 90 events will take place over three nights and at MJF53, which includes 500 different artists performing on 8 stages, Arena Simulcasts, educational events and exhibits. 59 different groups of artists will take the stage in performance over 30 hours of music starting Friday night, September 17 through Sunday night, September 19.

Performing both in the Arena and the Grounds will be the Septeto Nacional de Cuba, Roy Haynes, Billy Childs (with Scott Colley, Steve Wilson and Brian Blade); the Kronos Quartet, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, the Roy Hargrove Big Band, Dianne Reeves, and Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens.


Performing exclusively in the Arena will be Ahmad Jamal, Angelique Kidjo featuring Christian McBride, Lionel Loueke, Kendrick Scott and Mino Cinelu; the Freedom Band with Chick Corea, Kenny Garrett, Christian McBride and Roy Haynes; Delbert McClinton, Harry Connick, Jr., and Les Nubians.



IMPORTANT DEBUTS AND RETURNING ARTISTS
2010 marks the debut of many important and vital artists in the world of music, and some old friends who return to the stages of Monterey. Some of the debut artists at the 2010 MJF will be Harry Connick, Jr., George Wein, Roy Haynes, Fred Hersch, Javon Jackson, Ahmad Jamal, Angelique Kidjo, Les Nubians, Rudresh Mahanthappas Indo-Pak Coalition, Delbert McClinton, Nellie McKay, Gretchen Parlato, the Septeto Nacional de Cuba, Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens, Jake Shimabukuro, Somi, and Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue. Some of the returning artists (after at least a ten-year absence), include Kenny Garrett, Marcus Roberts, Romero Lubambo, Les McCann, John Firmin, Kim Nalley, and the Kronos Quartet, who are making their first appearance since 1980. Returning artists who have performed recently on the stages of MJF include Lionel Loueke, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Chick Corea, Kyle Eastwood, Chris Potter, Russell Malone, Brian Blade, Billy Childs, Christian McBride, Roy Hargrove, and Dianne Reeves.



2010 MJF ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE, SHOWCASE ARTIST AND COMMISSION ARTIST
In 2010, vocalist Dianne Reeves will serve as the Festivals Artist-In-Residence, with participation at the Next Generation Festival (April 9 - 11, 2010); the MJF Summer Jazz Camp in June, and at the 2010 Monterey Jazz Festival. Ms. Reeves will perform on the Arena Stage with her own group and with the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra; and on the Grounds with Strings Attached, featuring guitarists Russell Malone and Romero Lubambo.



The living history of jazz will be represented by NEA Jazz Master and two-time Grammy-winning drummer, Roy Haynes, who will be the 2010 MJF Showcase Artist, putting in three different performances: with the Freedom Band on the Arena Stage; with his own Fountain of Youth; and in a special conversation with the Jazz Journalists Association.

In a very special presentation, Billy Childs will write the 2010 MJF Commission Piece. Returning for his seventh appearance at MJF, and debuting his second Commission, Music for Two Quartets, the new work will feature Mr. Childs own Quartet (with Scott Colley, Steve Wilson and Brian Blade) and the cutting-edge Kronos Quartet (returning to MJF for the first time since 1980) on the Jimmy Lyons Stage in the Arena. The Billy Childs Quartet and Kronos will also be performing separately on the Grounds as well.



PIANISTS, SAXOPHONISTS AND VOCALISTS, OH MY!
A selection of world-renowned and up and coming pianists, saxophonists and vocalists will be highlighted at the 2010 Monterey Jazz Festival, including Billy Childs, Gerald Clayton, Chick Corea, Fred Hersch, Ahmad Jamal, Pascal Le Boeuf, Mark Levine, Les McCann, Judy Roberts, Marcus Roberts, and George Wein. On saxophone, the 2010 MJF will be featuring John Firmin, Greg Fishman, Ben Flocks, Kenny Garrett, Javon Jackson, Remy Le Boeuf, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Chris Potter, and Steve Wilson. Vocalists talking the stage will be Harry Connick, Jr., the House Jacks, Angelique Kidjo, Les Nubians, Delbert McClinton, Nellie McKay, Kim Nalley, Gretchen Parlato, Dianne Reeves, Naomi Shelton, Somi, and Sachal Vasandani.



BLUES IN THE AFTERNOON
Ever since the mid-1960s, the Monterey Jazz Festival has featured internationally-renowned and up-and-coming New Orleans, Gospel, and blues acts on Saturday afternoons. Continuing this tradition, on September 18, 2010, MJF will present the legendary Texas bluesman Delbert McClinton, the not-to-be-missed Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, and the fiery soul-gospel of Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens.

NEA JAZZ MASTERS, IN CONVERSATION, BLINDFOLD TEST, AND JAZZ FILM


2010 sees the appearances of four NEA Jazz Masters: pianists Chick Corea, Ahmad Jamal and George Wein; and jazz pioneer Roy Haynes, all awarded the nations highest honor in jazz. On Saturday, George Wein will be in conversation in Dizzys Den with notable journalists, along with the annual DownBeat Blindfold Test hosted by Dan Ouellette, this time with pianist Fred Hersch. On Sunday, Dizzys Den hosts Roy Haynes in conversation with the Jazz Journalists Association, followed by insights from Sam Stephenson, the author of The Jazz Loft Project: Photographs and Tapes of W. Eugene Smith from 821 Sixth Avenue, 1957-1965, withan accompanying traveling exhibit of the Jazz Loft Project in the Coffee House Gallery, open all weekend. In the Jazz Theater, jazz film takes center stage with showings of the four-part documentary, Icons Among Us: Jazz in the Present Tense on both Saturday and Sunday.



INTERNATIONALLY FLAVORED ARTISTS TAKE THE STAGE IN 2010
The Monterey Jazz Festival includes more music from around the globe. The 2010 MJF features Cuban son from Septeto Nacional de Cuba; Afropean soul from Les Nubians and Angelique Kidjo (featuring Christian McBride, Lionel Loueke, Kendrick Scott, and Mino Cinelu); South-Indian Carnatic jazz from Rudresh Mahanthappas Indo-Pak Coalition; Mark Levine & the Latin Tinge Music of Moacir Santos, the virtuostic ukulele of Jake Shimabukuro; New African Jazz from Somi; the global-trekking Berklee Global Jazz Institute Septet; the cool and subdued guitar of Hristo Vitchev, and the Dianne Reeves Strings Attached project, featuring Brazilian guitarist Romero Lubambo.



NEW GROOVES AND FAMILY DAY
New Grooves returns on Friday, September 17, with some of the more offbeat groups of the Festival. New Grooves for 2010 features the Hip-Hop symphony, Brass Bows and Beats in Dizzys Den; the dynamic and quirky pianist and vocalist Nellie McKay, and the cutting edge Indo-Pak Coalition with Rudresh Mahanthappa in the Night Club. The virtuoso vocal group, the House Jacks, rounds out New Grooves on the Garden Stage.



Sunday, September 19 marks the Festivals 5th Annual Family Day. Families and children of all ages can participate in special activities, hear the top student jazz ensembles from around the United States (selected at the Next Generation Jazz Festival, April 9 - 11, 2010) along with MJFs own Next Generation Jazz Orchestra and the Monterey County High School All-Star Band, and join in the fun with the return of the popular Percussion Playshop, MJFs innovative Instrument Petting Zoo with high-tech, professional musical instruments provided by Yamaha. The younger set can also bounce in the Jazzy Jumper on the West Lawn. The Banana Slug String Band will entertain families with two eco-conscious sets in the Coffee House Gallery.



2010 MONTEREY JAZZ FESTIVAL OFFICIAL POSTER ARTIST
The Argentinean illustrator Pablo Lobato has been selected for the second year as the Official Poster Artist for 53rd Annual Monterey Jazz Festival. Lobatos design for the 2010 MJF reflects a continuation of the tradition of reinterpretation of the classic trumpet and chair logo used by the Festival since 1958.

Full Weekend Arena Packages are available from $225, offering a reserved seat to each of 5 concerts on the Arena/Jimmy Lyons Stage (renewable annually), plus general admission access to 7 additional Grounds Stages and all Grounds activities. Daily Grounds Tickets are available from $35, including general admission access to 7 Grounds stages and activities, plus simulcasts of all Arena concerts. Full Weekend Grounds Tickets are available for $110. MJFs Family Discount Package begins at $80 for 2 Adult and 2 Youth Grounds Tickets, offering a savings of up to $20. Throughout the weekend, Youth Tickets (Ages 2 - 18) will be available for $15. Premier Access Passes are priced at $65 for Friday, $100 for Saturday or Sunday, and $265 for the entire weekend (with 2010 MJF adult ticket purchase).
