Myra Melford's new recording, For The Love Of Fire And Water, is an excellent one. It's a multi-part suite performed by Melford, Ingrid Laubrock, Mary Halvorson, Tomeka Reid and Susie Ibarra. It's one of the feature recordings in a decidedly internationally-flavored show. New York pianist Eric Plaks contributes music from four of his groups, German saxophonist Peter Ehwald hits the OMJ playlist for the first time, as does the Colombian ensemble, Asdrubal. South Africa's contribution come from a tribute to Dudu Pukwana by Duduvudu and free drumming from Asher Gamedze. The show closes with a lengthy set of music found on the We Jazz Records label's fundraiser release, Music For Ukraine.
