Remy Le Boeuf’s Assembly of Shadows: Heartland Radio
by Dan Bilawsky
This ear-grabbing date from Remy Le Boeuf's Assembly of Shadows--the band's third release, following its eponymous debut (in 2019) and Architecture of Storms (SoundSpore Records, 2021)--is a sonic mirror, reflecting the multihyphenate leader's recent travels in both life and sound. Influenced by an odyssey across inland America, sights encountered along the way, and the adventitious, airwaves-dictated soundtrack to the journey, Heartland Radio offers up a striking portrait of a Promethean artist with an unfettered imagination. Opening on ...

by Gareth Thompson
The industrial anarchists Throbbing Gristle stood by their notion that noise and frequency could change states of consciousness. Listening to saxophonist Anna Meadors of Joy On Fire, with her pitch-shifting and time-stretching, might back this idea up. Certainly the audience enters many realms of awareness on the band's album Hymn . Even the cover artwork, a close-up of beach grass in Maryland, was chosen for its dramatic contrasts. A core trio with numerous associates, Joy On Fire have ...

by Bruce Lindsay
Remy and Pascal Le Boeuf, horn player and pianist respectively, are precociously talented identical twins who have already received awards for their composition and playing. House Without A Door is their second album and on this showing there are more awards to come. The New York-based brothers play well-crafted original tunes: all 12 of the pieces are written by either Remy or Pascal although, interestingly, none of them are co-compositions. Their style is mainly modern, straight-ahead jazz. ...

"[Le Boeuf's] performances and compositions display an impressive level of sophistication. Textured harmonies and shifting time signatures are handled with aplomb." (San Francisco Chronicle)
"Pianist Pascal Le Boeuf is a 21st century renaissance man. He's made inroads in the worlds of classical music, indie-rock, and jazz . . . here is at least as much Debussy evident in his compositional style as there is Bill Evans . . . listeners who prefer quality over flash will be amply rewarded." (The Rochester City Paper)
