Nuno Ferreira

He began his music studies at age eight. In 2000 he completed his BFA in Jazz Performance at the New School for Social Research/Mannes College in New York. He released four albums of original compositions e participated in countless concerts and recording sessions, having had the privilege to play musicians such as John Ellis, David Binney, Perico Sambeat, Marc Miralta, Chris Kase, Albert Sanz, Jesus Santandreu, Jesse Chandler, Bill Campbell, Jochen Rueckert, Alexis Cuadrado, Zé Eduardo, Nelson Cascais, Mário Barreiros, Demian Cabaud, Mário Laginha, André Fernandes, Carlos Bica, Paul Gill, Afonso Pais and many others. He resides in Lisbon and Oporto, dividing his professional activity between concerts, composing and arranging music and teaching. He was the first jazz guitar teacher, at University level, in Portugal. He started teaching at ESMAE (Superior School of Music and Performance Arts, in Oporto) in 2003, where he still teaches guitar, improvisation, ensembles, composition and ear training. Between 2010 and 2012 he was the head of ESMAE’s Jazz department. In 1996 he began his teaching career, at the Hot Club of Portugal Jazz School (1996-98 e 2000-03), having also taught at Barreiro Jazz School (2000-2003), JB Jazz (2008-), Jobra Conservatory (2010) and Funchal Conservatory (2002-04). He was pedagogical director of the Barreiro Jazz School between 2001 and 2003. Participated as a teacher in Workshops in Europe and Asia, such as the “Seminário Internacional de Jazz e Música Latina de Valência” (Spain, 2003) and the “jazz-it-up!” Workshop in Macao (China, 2013). Some of the workshops he taught in Portugal include: Loures Jazz (1996), Workshop de Música de Cascais (2000,2001 e 2007), Workshop de Jazz do Funchal (2003), Musicaldas (2008,2009,2010 e 2011), Workshop Lagos Jazz (2009), Festival de Música Júnior (2012), Workshop de Jazz e Música Moderna da Universidade Lusíada (2010 e 2011). Was a lecturer and/or taught masterclasses at Lemmensinstituut (Leuven, Belgium, 2011), Seminário permanente de Jazz de Pontevedra (Spain, 2003 e 2010) and at the meeting of the International Association of Schools of Jazz in Sienna (Italy, 1997). Designed the curriculum and pedagogical programs for the “V Workshop Loures Jazz” (1996), Barreiro Jazz School (2001) and JbJazz (2008).
