Nori

Nori is an eclectic modern jazz band featuring Akina Adderley on vocals, Erik Telford on trumpet, Nick Litterski on keys, Aaron Allen on upright bass, and Andy Beaudoin on drums. Festival Peak describes Nori as “a five-person gift from Austin, TX.”

Enriching an aesthetic deeply rooted in American jazz and folk music, the ensemble playfully weaves together a myriad of global influences giving rise to a seamless synthesis of sound. These musical explorations expertly balance the narrative of the song with wide-open improvisations, echoing the transcendent tones of Nina Simone, Bill Frisell, John Coltrane, and Joni Mitchell.

The band’s debut album World Anew received much critical acclaim after its release in 2016. Their 2018 follow-up Bruise Blood highlighted visceral themes of social divisions in 21st century America. Nori is releasing an album exclusively on vinyl on December 3, 2021. The record documents the band's diverse catalogue and will include two new tracks – "The Garden (2021 version with strings)" and a cover of Nina Simone's "Four Women."

Honoring the creativity and spirit of a key jazz era

Honoring the creativity and spirit of a key jazz era

Source: Ken Franckling's Jazz Notes

The late 1950s and the 1960s were fertile years in the development of the hard-bop style. That incubation was so dominated by the players of one jazz record label that it has become known as The Blue Note Era because the Blue Note label’s bands and future bandleaders had an indelible impact on modern jazz. Trumpeter Dan Miller and tenor saxophonist Lew Del Gatto celebrated that style and spirit on Monday, December 10, performing with their rock-solid quintet for the ...

Drummer Art Blakey had a profound impact on jazz that has stretched from the 1940s, through bebop's 1950s and '60s heyday, right up to the present. The music associated with his Jazz Messengers band and his legacy as a bandleader were celebrated by the Dan Miller-Lew Del Gatto quintet on Sunday, November 11, in Naples FL. And what a grand legacy it is. Blakey, who passed away in 1990, was without a doubt the finest molder of other future bandleaders ...

Honoring and updating a classic saxophone sound and spirit

Honoring and updating a classic saxophone sound and spirit

Bandleader Woody Herman's Second Herd in the late 1940s featured a stunning saxophone section known as the Four Brothers. It featured tenormen Stan Getz, Zoot Sims and Herbie Steward, plus baritone saxophonist Serge Chaloff. The sound was swinging and vibrant as the four players dug into crisp unison lines and took turns passing solos to one another much like relay runners hand off the baton. Seventy years after the Four Brothers made their mark on big band jazz, Harry Allen ...

Buddy Rich and Rosemary Clooney were top of mind when trumpeter-singer David Pruyn brought his Jazz Legacy Big Band back to Port Charlotte on Monday, March 12. Both received multi-song tributes in this artful program. The evening also highlighted the music of other big-band leaders, composers and arrangers- some well known, some deserving of far more recognition. Pruyn drafted an A-team of Florida jazz musicians for this Charlotte County Jazz Society concert, with drummer Eddie Metz Jr. powering the band. ...

Singer Karla Harris celebrated the teamwork of Dave and Iola Brubeck on Friday, March 6 at the 35th annual Sarasota Jazz Festival. Few going into the concert may have been aware of the extent of Iola Brubeck's impact on her pianist husband's career, but they left with a much deeper understanding, thanks to Atlanta-based Harris' brief but insightful song introductions. Iola was Dave's early manager and came up with the jazz goes to college concept in the 1950s that helped ...
