Greg Cordez

UK-born, New Zealand raised, Cordez has lived and worked in London, Madrid, and New York City. A busy bassist, composer and educator now settled in the vibrant Bristol music scene.

As a jazz performer, Cordez has performed and recorded with Tony Malaby, Jon Cowherd, Steve Cardenas, Kenny Wollesen, Allison Miller, Kirk Knuffke, Micheal Blake, Iain Ballamy, Jason Rebello, Tim Garland, Huw Warren, Martin France, Chris Biscoe, Andy Sheppard, Sam Crockatt, Gareth Lochrane, John Law amongst others.

In 2013 Cordez started work on his project involving the talents of Jake McMurchie, Nick Malcolm, Jim Blomfield, and Mark Whitlam. The debut album ‘Paper Crane’ was released in 2015 to critical acclaim, and performances at London, Manchester, and Bristol Jazz Festivals followed.

In December of 2016, the second album ‘Last Things Last’ was recorded at Bunker Studios in Brooklyn. This project features leading improvisers Steve Cardenas, Allison Miller, Kirk Knufke, Michael Blake. The album was released to further critical acclaim and made it as Editors Pick in Downbeat Magazine.

Following on from this, Cordez recorded album number three in NYC to be released 2021 on Ropeadope Records.

"Chekov's Gun" opens this recording with a laid-back yet electrifying atmosphere hinting vaguely of a Soft Machine influence. “Cherry V Des Moines" has a rock-based feel but the overlaid horn ensemble sections imbue it with a jazz-inflected impetus as does Michael Blake's sinewy tenor solo. “Figlock" is dominated by Steve Cardenas's chiming electric guitar work and Cardenas also plays a vital role on the ruminative title track where his echoey guitar channels the likes of Bill Frisell and John Scofield. ...
