Eliane Elias

Throughout her distinguished career, having recorded more than 26 albums as a leader, the multi-GRAMMY®-winning pianist/singer/songwriter Eliane Elias has consistently displayed her distinctive and immediately recognizable musical style, which blends her Brazilian roots and sensuous, alluring voice with her virtuosic instrumental jazz, classical and compositional skills. As a testament to her immense talent, Elias has sold over 2.2 million albums during the span of her career and has over 30 million digital streams on Spotify alone, but she is not resting on her laurels. Elias is releasing a new Orchestral album in September 2019 (still untitled as of this writing), where once again, her mastery and artistry as a vocalist, pianist, composer, arranger and producer are in full display. Recorded in Brazil and at Abbey Road Studios in London, expect another sumptuous musical treat featuring some alluring Brazilian classics, heartfelt originals and a nod to one of her favorites, Frank Sinatra. Says Eliane, “I am very proud of this album and feel it’s one of the most romantic sets of music I’ve ever produced”. Elias followed up the 2017 Latin GRAMMY®-winning album, Dance of Time with the all-instrumental Music from Man of La Mancha, released on April 13, 2018 and debuting again at#1 on the Billboard Jazz Chart and on iTunes in several countries. The album features nine individualized interpretations of songs composed by the late Mitch Leigh for the legendary 1960s Broadway musical Man of La Mancha. Elias’ two previous recordings also achieved several #1 chart positions and each won GRAMMY® Awards. Made in Brazil, released on March 31, 2015, on Concord Jazz, marked a musical homecoming for Elias. In her long career as a solo artist, it results from the first time she’s recorded a disc in her native Brazil since moving to the United States in 1981. On February 15, 2016, Made in Brazil was awarded a GRAMMY® in the category of Best Latin Jazz Album. Her 2017 release, Dance of Time, debuted at #1 on two Billboard charts, #1 in the iTunes Jazz Albums chart and #1 on the Amazon.com Brazilian and Latin Jazz charts. The album took home a Latin GRAMMY for Best Latin Jazz/Jazz Album. On May 28, 2013, Concord Jazz presented Elias’ I Thought About You (A Tribute to Chet Baker), an album that offered her personalized spin on the work of a key American jazz artist while spotlighting her connection to the singer-instrumentalist tradition.

Eliane Elias: Mirror Mirror

Read "Mirror Mirror" reviewed by Jim Worsley

The Chick Corea composition “Mirror Mirror" made its debut on a record led by Joe Henderso. Compelled by the tune's conversational and interactive elements, the astute tenor saxophonist made it the title track. Mirror Mirror (MPS, 1980) featured the rhythm section of Ron Carter and Billy Higgins. Henderson's quartet was, not surprisingly, rounded out by Corea. Gleaned from Snow White—"Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who's the fairest of them all?"— Corea's vision is indeed of beauty. Beautiful melodic sensibilities mirrored ...

Eliane Elias: Mirror Mirror

Read "Mirror Mirror" reviewed by Edward Blanco

Pianist and composer Eliane Elias reveals a wonderful reflection of piano madness on the dazzling Mirror Mirror, capturing the mastery of two piano legends and the fabulous key work of a third legend in the making. One can simply not go wrong listening to the late great Chick Corea and Cuban-born master Chucho Valdes providing amazing call and respond to Elias's own keyboard play. The result is compelling, tasteful, light jazz performed with elegance and grace. An album ...

Eliane Elias has glistened across the global music scene since first coming to the United States in 1981, playing fiery jazz, beautiful pop tunes, and warm and charming music from her native Brazil. She became established as a major jazz pianist. But as her career has grown and her popularity has endured, she's become known as something else. Singer. She probably always sang, even as a child and then a child prodigy, studying piano at age ...

Eliane Elias: A Study in Longevity

Read "Eliane Elias: A Study in Longevity" reviewed by Nick Catalano

It must be more than 30 years or so since I went to the Blue Note to review a new vocalist/ pianist/ composer/ teacher who had just arrived from São Paulo with a musical entourage and extended family members. Inordinately glamorous and confidently poised, Eliane Elias sat at the piano playing the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim whose music was still in ascendancy in the U.S. The performance of this lithesome chanteuse who had begun playing as youngster, was enjoyable ...

Eliane Elias Trio: Czech Republic, 2008

In 2008, pianist-singer Eliane Elias was on tour with her trio in Brno, the Czech Republic. Her performance was billed as a “Tribute to Bill Evans" in support of her album Something for You. As with all of Elaine's concerts, this one demonstrates yet again what an exceptional and powerful jazz pianist she is. By powerful, I mean sensitive, driven and strong. Having held her hands in mine, I can tell you she has enormous strength.  Go make yourself some ...

Eliane Elias & Marc Johnson: Lost Bill Evans Song

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Days before Bill Evans's death on September 15, 1980, the pianist handed his bassist, Marc Johnson, a cassette tape. On the tape was a previously unperformed original by Evans called Here Is Something for You. In 2007, Eliane Elias and her partner, Marc Johnson, performed the song on video, which is up at YouTube. As you'll see, they clearly share a deep love for Evans. Marc, of course, was the last Bill Evans Trio bassist. Eliane has always had a ...
