CKay

Several years after winning "Showtime at the Apollo", singer/songwriter, CKAY, has become one of NYC's most impressive new Indie-Pop artists. Although getting her start in R&B, her more recent work combines a vocal quality comparable to Adele, with the quirky musical nature of Regina Spektor, and grand, epic melodies of bands like Coldplay, Florence and the Machine, and U2. It is also hard to overlook CKAY’s contagious, bubbly personality. Scatterbrained, comical, and very unafraid to say whatever’s on her mind, she is something of a paradox, an eccentric off-stage personality that produces an overwhelmingly deep, rich sound with just her lyrics and a piano. Singer/Songwriter, Musician.

Forgotten Series: Nellie McKay - Get Away from Me (2004)

Source: Something Else!

By Tom Johnson This spunky singer, 19 years old at the time, was a lot smarter and had a much more mature ear than her age indicated. Incorporating everything from saccharine Bacharachian melodies to husky jazz to edgy hip-hop, it might have seemed that Get Away From Me was all over the map sonically. But Nellie McKay's smooth, seasoned vocals and wry, subtle sense of humor bonded it all together. She was having a lark on all the overly serious, ...
