Big Lazy

"Big Lazy, the elegantly gritty instrumental trio led by the extraordinary guitarist Stephen Ulrich, plays stunningly beautiful music that evokes everything from truckers' romps to the haunting film scores of Bernard Herrmann." — The New Yorker

Big Lazy has performed their singular brand of crime jazz and highway twang from New Orleans dive bars to the Whitney Museum of American Art. For over 2 decades the trio has honed its craft in New York City’s downtown music scene. Simultaneously noir and pastoral, gothic and modern, Big Lazy dwells in a landscape of gritty and gracefully crafted American music.

Big Lazy’s sixth release Dear Trouble (Checkered Past Records 2019), conjures images from big sky country to seedy back rooms. With a nod toward classic guitar instrumentals and a fiery performance style, the new album captures the spirit of the trio’s legendary live shows. Dear Trouble features NYC luminaries Marc Ribot, Steven Bernstein, Peter Hess (Philip Glass ensemble) and Marlysse Rose Simmons (Miramar).

Big Lazy founder Stephen Ulrich is the composer for the HBO series Bored to Death and the art forgery documentary Art and Craft.
