My Jazz Story

I'm a bassist in a Chiropractors body. While I appreciate my day job, music isn't just be played constantly in my office it's in my head way all day every day. Especially jazz. Jazz is everything. It's the blues, it's swing, it's calypso and world music, it's even disco and hip hop. But it's also you and me. It's love and sadness, elation and even depresion. Jazz is beyond just merely an expression of it all. Jazz can connect us all possibly even more than any other one genre can. There are friends of mine that don't consider themselves jazz fans, but when I play them the right artist in the right way, they get it. They might not turn into a jazz fanatic like myself, but something in them will click. And that's when jazz doesn't just communicate, but can totally transform someone's own personal ideas of themselves and who they thought they were. It's magic. I believe everyone should be able to experience this and all that jazz has to offer at some point in their life.

My House Concert Story

I saw Stanley Clarke right before the pandemic began at the Blue Note in Manhattan. I went by myself and anticipated only being able to sit at the bar and not at a a table. But I showed up early and the hostess was kind enough to seat me within 2 chairs from the front and center of the stage. I've listened to School Days and his works with Chick Corea, George Duke and many others for years but really wanted to make it a point to see him in person. And I'm glad I did because that night was unbelievable. My jaw had to be picked up from the floor multiple times. I took close up pictures with my phone of both of his hands and remained fixated on them throughout the gig. I'm so grateful that even though I wasn't yet born when he was at his most prolific in the 1970s, I could still attend a show of his and be in total awe the entire time. He's what I would consider a total killer. An assassin of the low end of jazz.
