Gerald Carboy

Upright and Electric Bassist

About Me

I began playing the bass in 1962. As most players of that time period, I was greatly influenced by the rhythm & blues of America and the influx of British music.

I studied music theory, composition and arranging with the Maestro Julio Malatesta. In later years studied jazz composition and improvisation with jazz saxophonist Anthony Bertolotti.

Beginning in 1976, I began formulating an instructional methodology based upon my experience as an instructor and performing artist. My methodology is primarily a study in improvisation and chord construction, but is widely known by many simply as THE METHOD, and is widely used and accepted by musicians and music instructors across the nation.

I have performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland with jazz percussionist Terry Silverlight, jazz guitarist Kevin Eubanks , jazz vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater, and jazz flutist Chris Hinze (Netherlands). In that year I also performed with The Chris Hinze Combination (Keystone/RCA), performing at many festivals throughout Europe.

I Also performed throughout the United Kingdom with David Sancious & Tone (USA) (Columbia/Arista).

Nationally I performed with the jazz fusion bands David Sancious & Tone and Barry Miles & Silverlight. I have also performed with Tal Farlow, Jeanie Bryson, Vic Juris, Kevin Eubanks, Ernest Carter, Barry Miles, Terry Silverlight and Alex Ligertwood.

I have performed as part of the opening acts for shows with Return to Forever, Larry Coryell, Chick Corea, Pat Martino, Tony Williams Lifetime, Alan Hallsworth, George Duke, Stanley Clarke, Jim Hall, Blood, Sweat and Tears, Peter Frampton, Ahmad Jamal, Kansas, Hot Tuna, and Santana. .

Locally I have performed with my projects The New Standard Jazz Quintet and The Motor City Revue. Also with Rob Thomas, Gary US Bonds, Bruce Springsteen, Southside Johnny, the bands Rain, Yasgur's Farm, Supernatural (A Santana Tribute), Tim McLoone and the Atlantic Coast Band featuring the Shirleys, The Atlantic Jazz Trio, Bob Boyd Jazz Trio, Jeff Levine Jazz Trio, Bob Himmelberger, Doug Clark, Vinnie Corrao, Bob Devoe, Rob Paparozzi, Vance Villastrago, Jeanie Bryson, Tommy Labella, Gladstone Trott, Danny Walsh, Jackie Jones, Gordon James, and Line Drive.

I am also an original (1993) and active member of the charity organization Holiday Express, whose mission is to deliver music, food, gifts, financial support and friendship to those with the greatest need for the gift of human kindness during the holiday season and throughout the year.

It is a wonderful charitable organization featuring hundreds of dedicated volunteers and more than 60 professional singers and musicians from noted bands and the Broadway stage, who perform at over 50 shows each year during the months of November and December at children hospitals, homeless shelters and developmental centers.

My Jazz Story

Jazz just seemed like the logical progression for me musically. I am sure many feel the same way. Once you start studying, you finally realize that you will be improving your craft until you pass on to the next level. Being introduced to jazz at a young age by my father and then my eventual teacher, you realize there is such a vast difference between pop music and the cerebral nature of jazz. It is truly what we live for .........
