Donald Mohr

Donald W. Mohr is a Jazz Guitarist in Austin, TX originally from New York.

About Me

Donald W. Mohr grew up just outside of Peekskill New York, home of Aaron Copeland and Jackie Gleason. Introduced to jazz at a young age by various New York musicians such as Paul Serrato, Lee Dratfield, and Eugene Randolph, he studied with Steve LaMattina before attending the Berklee College of Music for Contemporary Writing and Production and studied guitar with David Tronzo and Craig Hlady.

After college, Donald worked as an audio engineer with a focus on mastering. In 2011, with longtime friend and college roommate Jacob Hamman, he formed The Jazz Destroyers. After Jake moved out of town, Donald re-formed the band with a new lineup with Thomas Baker on Bass and Dale Lynn on drums. He has performed with David Lackzo, Willie Oteri, Michael Mordecai, and Joshua Thomson.

Donald has also produced and scored a feature film, “Jesse Thunderwake: American Icon.”

My Jazz Story

I love jazz because it's possibly the most expressive form available. I was first exposed to jazz with Miles Davis' Porgy and Bess. I met Joe Beck late in life and I am glad I had the honor. The best show I ever attended was Tower Of Power Peekskill 2001. The first jazz record I bought was Miles Davis' Bitches Brew My advice to new listeners is to listen to several musicians play the same song. It's the core of the jazz tradition and clearly highlights the difference between each performance. If you ever see my name on the ballot when voting, I'd appreciate your vote!
