About Me

I did not grow up in a musical family; I did not hear my mother play Coltrane records around the house; and I definitely did not start singing or playing an instrument before I could walk. I write to express my love for music, and I hope that comes through to anyone who reads my words. Some of my favorite artists include: Billie Holiday, Stevie Wonder, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Nina Simone, Marvin Gaye, Duke Ellington, Celia Cruz, Dizzy Gillespie, the Marsalis family, Luciano Pavarotti, Jon Batiste, Lalah Hathaway, Lizz Wright, Randy Travis, Beyonce, Earth Wind & Fire, Michael Jackson, Rakim, Pharell/N.E.R.D., Lauryn Hill, and Jay-z.

My Jazz Story

* I love jazz because... I wish I could explain it. I'll try another day. * I was first exposed to jazz in 1995. I was an intern/volunteer for a member of Congress in Georgia. Another intern convinced me to go with her to register voters at a jazz concert. * I've met and interviewed a ton of musicians. The first musicians I ever met were Wynton Marsalis and the members of his septet. * My most memorable meeting: I had dinner at Dizzy's with Stanley Crouch and Gunther Schuller. * The best show I ever attended was Wynton Marsalis and his septet performing music from "Uptown Ruler." Second best: every time I've seen Jon Batiste! * The first jazz record I bought was Miles Davis "Birth of the Cool" * My advice to new listeners is be open to the music.
