My Jazz Story

I love jazz because its the best freedom of expression when it comes the authenticity of the music. I was first exposed to jazz in the 9th grade when my band teacher gave me Miles Davis "Kind of Blue". There, I learn about Paul Chambers and the role of a jazz bassist. This album changed my life forever and made me want to learn everything there is about jazz. I met some incredible musicians along my career. I've had the opportunity to perform with the likes of the Count Basie Orchestra, Wynton Marsalis, Jason Marsalis, Marcus Roberts, Wycliffe Gordon, Leroy Jones, Laila Baili, Carmen Bradford, Eric Alexander, and many more. The best show I ever attended was the Spring Quartet at Florida State University back in 2016. It was the first time I'd ever seen Joe Lovano and Jack Dejohnette live and what a wonderful Concert. The first jazz record I bought was "We Get Request" by the Oscar Peterson Trio. I learn that entire record in a 3 month period and tried to emulate every single bass note that Ray Brown played. It is one one of the greatest trio records every recorded in my opinion. My advice to new listeners is to have an open mind about the music. Each artist has a unique path that one takes and the music is suppose to depict that imagery. Make sure to listen with the pure intent to give it a shot.
