About the Album

Up-South was originally composed sometime in the early 90's to play as a duet with the great St. Louis drummer Phillip Wilson and it's title came from a conversation Reddy had with Wilson regarding race in America. It was later recorded in 1996 on Reddy's "Post-War Euphoria" by his Honor System ensemble. Here it is given a new reading by an octet for Reddy's "Bechet: Our Contemporary" recording. It is an example of the polyphony of early American Jazz music, several instruments playing individual melodies simultaneously.
