About the Album

Featuring the amazing Dele Sosimi, Biola Dosunmu and Rowland Sutherland, Afro and Latin tinged jazz single 'Ilé (Iyesa)' heralds new album ‘Don’t Waste Your Ancestors’ Time’ by the Phil Dawson ٤-tet. Phil Dawson is a UK guitarist, composer and bandleader who learned his trade working with legends like South African jazz trumpet giant Hugh Masekela, Nigerian Afrobeat co-creator Tony Allen, Ethio-jazz pioneer Mulatu Astatke, Ghanaian afro- rock dons Osibisa, as well as London cultural fusion specialists Lokkhi Terra, Soothsayers and Dele Sosimi. This first single from the forthcoming new album is a collaboration with both Dele and Biola Dosunmu (Estuary 21, Fatai Rolling Dollar) and features the heavy flute playing of Rowland Sutherland (Jazz Warriors, Airto Moreira) and a cooking Brazilian rhythm section of Marius Rodrigues (drums, Da Lata/Nigel Price) and Matheus Nova (Ed Motta, Antonio Forcione), topped off by genius percussionist Maurizio Ravalico (Jamiroquai, Collocutor, Ezz- Thetic collective.) Horns are provided by Nick Walters (Paradox Ensemble, Ruby Rushton), Justin Thurgur (Bellowhead, Dele Sosimi) and Tamar Collocutor (Collocutor, Khalab Trio, Awkward Corners etc.) ‘Ilé (Iyesa)’ is a unique combination of Nigerian and Brasilian vibes, although we’ve chosen the Spanish word for the rhythm (Ijexa) which is usually dedicated to the Orishas Shango (Xango) and Ogun (Ogum.) The Yoruba lyrics tell a philosophical story around getting the hard work in while we’re young, using allegories like growing yam and plantain.
