"Northern Cities Vowel Shift" is the first track from Accelerate Every Voice, the second release by Grammy Award winning pianist and composer Cory Smythe, out June 12, 2020 on Pyroclastic Records. Imbued with microtonal harmonies, precisely tuned intervals, and evolving layers of vowel sounds, the track features multiple voices and Smythe's piano interacting to form a kinetic, hypnotic brew. Accelerate Every Voice merges the voices of five singers from the a cappella and new and improvised music scenes with Smythe's piano to create riveting soundscapes evoking, among other things, cyborg choirs and the natural world. Inspired in part by Andrew Hill’s Lift Every Voice” and powered by Smythe's extraordinary creative and musical gifts, the album's nine tracks feature Kyoko Kitimura, Michael Mayo, Raquel Acevedo Klein, Steven Hrycelak, Kari Francis on vocals, vocal bass, loops, and vocal percussion, and Smythe on piano and electronics.
