About the Album

From the liner notes by Deanna Witkowski: To my knowledge, this trumpet-bass-piano piece has not been recorded since Mary Lou Williams’s 1944 session for producer Moe Asch. (It appeared on the flip side of the 45-rpm record containing Mary’s arrangement of Gershwin’s “Lady Be Good”; Coleman Hawkins would claim this melody one year later as “Rifftide,” and Thelonious Monk would appropriate it in 1954 as “Hackensack.”) The spare instrumentation, unusual form, and Mary’s single-note harmony line, played underneath the trumpet until the solos begin, place the sound in the 1940s while remaining ultramodern.
