While it is said that March comes in like a lion and leaves like a lamb. In the world of jazz and blues reissues, special event recordings and collections, it comes in like a lion and leaves, well, like a tiger.

MARCH 2nd

Featured Reissue of the Month:

  • Dave Brubeck “For All Time” (Columbia / Legacy). This is a five CD boxset featuring the reissuing of 1959’s “Time Out,” 1961’s “Time Further Out,” 1964’s “Time Changes,” 1965’s “Time In” and 1962’s “Countdown: Time in Outer Space.” These digitally remastered editions include bonus material and both original and updated liner notes including notes by Brubeck. A total of 6 bonus previously unreleased tracks are included. [ review ].

  • Branford Marsalis “The Steep Anthology” (Columbia / Legacy). This is the first reissue / collection that spans Marsalis’ career at Columbia.

  • Thad Jones and the Danish Radio Big Band “Live at the Montmartre: A Good Time Was Had By All” (Storyville). This release was from a live recording in Copenhagen from 1978.

  • Various Artists “The Jubilee Shows, volume 9” (Storyville). Earl Hines, Peggy Lee and Les Paul Trio tracks are included in this collection of two Armed Forces Radio Service programs from 1945.

  • Benny Goodman “On the Air: Original 1935, 36 and 38 Broadcasts” (Storyville). These are from the Camel Caravan broadcasts and feature Harry James, Gene Krupa, Lionel Hampton, Teddy Wilson and Martha Tilton.

  • Idris Muhammed "House of the Rising Son" (CTI). This is a reissue of the 1976 release and features two bonus tracks.

  • Joey DeFrancesco "Street of Dreams" (Silverwolf). This is a reissue of his 1995 release.

  • Arcado "For Three Strings and Orchestra" (Winter & Winter). This is a reissue of their 1991 jazz fusion release.

  • Marc Johnson "Right Brain Patrol" (Winter & Winter). This is a reissue of his 199 release.

  • Gary Thomas "Kold Kage" (Winter & Winter). This is a reissue of his 1991 release.


MARCH 9th

  • Bukka White ”Big Daddy” This 13 track collection features such recordings as “Gibson Hill,” “Shake My Hand Blues” and “Hobo Blues.”

  • Donald Byrd “At the Half Note Café vols 1 &2” – a double CD set.
  • Donald Byrd “Free Form”

  • Duke Pearson “Sweet Honey Bee”
  • Sam Rivers “Fuchsia Swing Song”

  • Big Joe Williams “Stars of Mississippi Songs” (JSP). A five CD, 126 track collection.

  • Caravan “Green Bottles for Marjorie” (Eclectic). Culminated from BBC recordings between 1968 and 1972.

  • O’Donel Levy “Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky” (P-Vine Japan / Groove Merchant). This reissue is from 1974.

  • Mike Longo “900 Shares of the Blues” (P-Vine Japan / Groove Merchant). This reissue is from a 1975 release.

  • Larry Willis “Inner Crisis” (P-Vine Japan / Groove Merchant). This reissue is culminated from two ensemble recordings from 1973 that features Eddie Gomez, Harold Vick, David Bergeron, Roland Prince and Warren Benbow.

  • “Joy” from 1968 featuring Arild Anderson.
  • “We Could Be Flying” from 1974 and features Steve Kuhn, Steve Swallow and Jon Christensen.
  • “Cloud Nine Blue” from 1976 and features John Surman.

  • Charmaine Neville “Queen of the Mardi Gras” (P-Vine Japan / Gert Town). This 1998 recording features three bonus tracks.

  • Mel Brown “Chicken Fat” (Verve / Impulse!). Reissued from the 1967 recording.

  • Clark Terry & Chico O’Farrill “Spanish Rice” (Verve / Impulse!). Reissued from the 1966 recording.

  • Gloria Coleman “Soul Sisters” (Verve / Impulse!). Reissued from the 1963 recording featuring an organ combo with Grant Green and Leo Wright.

  • Yusef Lateef “The Golden Flute” (Verve / Impulse!). Reissued from the 1966 recording featuring Roy Brooks.

  • Archie Shepp “The Cry of My People” (Verve / Impulse!). Reissued from the 1972 recording featuring the stellar line-up of Cornell Dupree, Bernard Purdie, Ron Carter, Leroy Jenkins, Jimmy Garrison, Charles McGhee and Harold Maburn, Jr.

  • George Shearing Lullabies of Birdland: A Musical Autobiography (Concord). This is a double CD set.

  • Various Artists Concord Jazz SACD Sampler (Concord). This collection is remastered for the Super Audio CD format.


MARCH 16th

  • Gordon Beck Quartet “Experiment with Pops” (Art of Life Records). Recordings from 1967 featuring John McLaughlin and Tony Oxley.

  • George Barnes “Guitars Anyone & Swing, Guitars” (Audiophile). A ‘two-fer’ release of the 1964 recording (with Carl Kress) and the 1972 Famous Door recording with Milt Hinton, Jo Jones and either Dick Hyman or Hank Jones on guitar.

  • Johnny Dodds “Complete Paramount Recordings, volume 2” (Black Swan). This collection of the ground breaking clarinetist works with various artists including Blind Blake, Paramount Pickers, Lovie Austin and Freddie Keppard.

  • Rashaan Roland Kirk ”Here Comes the Whistleman (Water). From Kirk’s 1967 recording in the Atlantic Studios in NYC featuring Lonnie Smith.

  • Charles Mingus “Tonight at Noon” (Water / Atlantic). A collection from two sessions that was released in 1964 featuring the same crew that he made both “Oh Yeah” and “The Clown.”


From Fantasy Records, a series of Orrin Keepnews (who recieved a lifetime honor from the Grammy Awards) Riverside recordings reissues that have been remastered in the 20-bit format:

  • Thelonius Monk "Thelonius Monk Play Duke Ellington" - features a trio with Oscar Pettiford and Kenny Clarke which was Monk's first recording for Riverside and Riverside's first 12 inch release.
  • Bill Evans "New Jazz Concepts" - this is Evans debut for Riverside from 1956 and features Teddy Kotick and Paul Motain.
  • Cannonball Adderley and Milt Jackson "Things are Getting Better" - reissue of their 1958 collaboration with Wynton Kelly, Percy Heath and Art Blakey.
  • Chet Baker "Chet Baker Plays the Best of Lerner and Loewe" - this 1959 release is reissued with the stellar line-up that includes Herbie Mann, Zoot Simms and Pepper Adams.

  • Art Pepper "Smack Up" - a 1960 recording from Contemporary Records where Pepper teamed with Jack Sheldon, Pete Jolly, Jimmy Bond and Frank Butler.

From ECM’s fantastic Rarum series where the artists help choose the tracks on their reissue, contribute photos to the booklet and write the liner notes. Some releases contain unreleased material and 96/24 bit remastered digipacks.

  • Dave Holland “Rarum X: Selected Recordings”
  • Egberto Gismonti “Rarum XI: Selected Recordings”

From Chronological Classics:

  • Benny Goodman “1942-1944”
  • Anita O’Day “1950-1952”. Recorded during her comeback under the guidance of Norman Granz of this top of the line jazz and pop vocalist.
  • Mildred Bailey “1945-1950”. Also, a collection of recordings from the vocalist’s comeback period.
  • Stan Getz “1951-1952”. This collection contains both live and studio recordings that feature guitarist Jimmy Raney.
  • Bill Coleman “1951-1952”
  • Sherman Williams ”1947-1951”
  • Amos Milburn ”1948-1949”

  • Lester Young ”With the Oscar Peterson Trio” (Universe). Culminated from sessions in the 1950’s of the ensemble and features a bonus good humored recording of “It Takes Two to Tango,” which feature the only recording of Young as a vocalist.

  • Pete Fountain and Al Hirt “New Orleans Jazz” (GHB). A Dixieland collection with two of the legends of New Orleans.

  • Laurindo Almeida & Charlie Byrd ”Tango” (Groove Note). This Latin tinged reissue is from a 1985 recording.


Reissues from Delmark Records:

  • George Lewis Singing Clarinet A reissue of a 1953 recording of a New Orleans Brass band with a rhythm section..
  • Paul Lingle ”Live at the Jug Club.” A reissue of a 1953 concert of this great ragtime pianist.
  • Gene Mayl’s Dixieland Rhythm Kings ”The New Low Down.” A reissue from a 1965 live concert recording.
  • Dink Johnson ”Mr. Johnson Signing Off.” A reissue of a classic New Orleans pianist.


From Acrobat Gold Records:

  • Big Joe Williams ”Chicago 1963” A series of live recordings from 1963
  • Lightin’ Hopkins ”King of the Texas Blues”. This compiles three sessions between 1966 and 1969 from this guitar legend.
  • John Lee Hooker ”Rock With Me”. Half of these tracks have only been available in the UK and includes and 18 and a half minute recording of “I Hated the Day I Was Born.”

  • Count Basie “Alternate Takes, Volume 6, 1944-1952” (Neatwork)

  • Benny Goodman “Alternate Takes, Volume 4, 1939-1940” (Neatwork)

  • Benny Goodman “1942-1944” (Neatwork). A 13 track collection from July 1942.

  • Various Artists ”First Ladies of Song” (ASV). A five CD box set celebrating the greatest female voices including Ella Fitzgerald, Ethel Waters, Billie Holiday, Judy Garland, and Lena Horne.

  • Bessie Smith ”The Complete Recordings, vol. 7” (Frog). A single CD collection of 21 recordings.


MARCH 23rd

Blue Note’s Rudy Van Gelder (RGV) reissue series:

  • Sonny Rollins “Newk’s Time”
  • Horace Silver “The Cape Verdean Blues”
  • Jimmy Smith “Prayer Meeting”
  • Jimmy Smith “Rockin’ the Boat”
  • Cecil Taylor “Conquistador” – features a bonus alternate take.
  • Stanley Turrentine “Never Let Me Go”

  • Hank Jones “The Talented Touch / Porgy & Bess” (Okra-Tone). This ‘two-fer’ reissue of these recordings from 1958 and 1960 featuring Milt Hinton, Kenny Burrell, Elvin Jones, Ossie Johnson and Barry Galbraith.


From Concord Jazz:

  • Rosemary Clooney Songs from the Classic Television Series
  • Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers Blakey’s Best. This is a 2 for 1 reissue that includes the records “In the Korner” and “Straight Ahead.”
  • Charlie Byrd Byrd & Brazil. This is a 2 for 1 reissue that includes the records “Sugarloaf Suite” and “Brazilville.”

  • The Dukes of Dixieland ”Dukes of Dixieland at Disneyland / Struttin’ at the World’s Fair” (Collectables / Columbia). This is a double disc release.


From Verve:

  • Dee Dee Bridgewater ”Live.” This is a DVD.
  • John Frigo ”I Love John Frigo...He Swings” (LPR)
  • Roger Kellaway ”Roger Kellaway Cello Quartet” (LPR)
  • Lyle Ritz ”How About Uke” (LPR)
  • Tony Scott ”Tony Scott” (LPR)
  • Stuff Smith ”Cat on a Hot Fiddle” (LPR)

  • Monica Mancini “The Ultimate Mancini” (Concord). This is a collection of new recordings of original Mancini arrangements featuring Plas Johnson.


MARCH 30th

  • Hoagy Carmichael ”The First of the Singer / Songwriters: 1924-1945” (JSP). A four CD collection from his fresh out of college sessions in Indiana to his pop success with “Star Dust.”


Other Releases in March (release date TBA)

  • Dizzy Gillespie & the UN Orchestra ”Live at the Royal Festival Hall” (Enja). This is from a 1997 concert.

  • Anthony Braxton “Ninetet 1997, volume 2” (Leo). A two CD collection recorded at Yoshi’s featuring Braxton’s nine piece ensemble. The set includes two 72 minute Ghost Trance pieces: Compositions 209 & 210

  • Eugene Chadbourne and Guests “Dr. Chadbourne’s Adventures at the Tonic Guitar Festival Summer 1999” (Leo). A 2 CD collection from this live performance featuring members of Sonic Youth, Alan Light and Eliot Sharp.

  • John McLaughlin ”The John McLaughlin Montreaux Concerts 1974-2003” (Warner Brothers). This is a 17 CD collection from the artists many appearances at the festival.


Ray Noble & Al Bowlly reissue from a 10 part series:

  • ”Can’t We Meet Again” is from 1930-1934 recordings made in London.
  • ”Roll Up the Carpet” is from the early 1930’s.
  • ”Sweetheart” is from the 1930’s.


Here are some artists on the reissue docket for April: Coleman Hawkins, Errol Gardner, Lightin’ Hopkins, Cal Tjader, Sammy Davis, Jr. and James Brown. Then in May, an exciting Retrospective of the Contemporary Record Label from Fantasy will highlight the month.
