Could you plese tell me if it is possible to buy a copy of 'The Complete Sam Rivers on Blue Note (Mosaic Records) set on cd or where I can get it. Thank you.

Marty:

Because of the high demand for Mosaic's limited edition boxed sets, which seems to increase exponentially once they are out of print, most of those offered for sale seem to end up on ebay auction lists, as sellers are trying to maximize their return. You may find one at a fixed price in a store such as Jazz Record Center in New York City. You can reach Fred at [email protected]. Expect to pay $30 to $50 per disc plus shipping if you find it.

Catherine from Hollywood, CA wrote:

How many versions are there of Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" and who are the artists?

Catherine:

There are far too many for me to list. It appears on a number of Brubeck LPs and CDs, as well as a few bootlegs, in addition to many other releases. The following links to All Music Guide will give you an idea of how many times it has appeared on LP and CD, and there are many other titles not shown in these links:

AMG 1 , AMG 2 , AMG 3 .

Please also note that Paul Desmond was the sole credited composer of "Take Five," though lyrics by Iola Brubeck were added later. Other artists outside of jazz have also written songs called "Take Five," which have no relation to this jazz hit.

Gary Burger from St. Louis, MO wrote:

Columbia records in the '50's (I think) released a record entitled 'I Like Jazz,' which was a compilation of a number of jazz recordings, and one track had a trumpet solo by Bix Beiderbeck (along with a vocal) on a tune called "Sentimental Baby". It probably was with the Whiteman or Goldkette orchestras. I would like to obtain the "I Like Jazz" album (if I have the title correct), and would also like to know where I could get the Bix recording.

Gary:

This Columbia LP anthology pops up in used record stores from time to time, but I've had no luck finding a copy on line so far. I'm betting that Joe at Euclid Records in St. Louis gets this LP in trade from time to time. It has a cover with people in various professions stating "I Like Jazz." The smae title and motif was used by Columbia in the late 1980s or so, but with modern artists.

  • The track "Sentimental Baby," featuring Bix Beiderbecke with the Frankie Trumbauer Orchestra, was recorded Oct. 5, 1928. It appears on the following releases:
  • The Complete Okeh & Brunswick Recordings of Bix Beiderbecke, Frankie Trumbauer & Jack Teagarden (Mosaic 7 CD boxed set)
  • Bix and Tram (JSP 4 CD boxed set)
  • 1928-1929, Vol. 7 (Masters of Jazz, out of print)
  • Hope this info helps.

Rob Leonard from Hendersonville, TN wrote:

I have a recording on tape of "Natural Woman" performed live and accompanied on piano by artists unknown in a club atmosphere. I know the tape was recorded from vinyl by a friend who has since died. I would love to find out who the artists are or what the album was. This particular arrangement begins very softly and lyrically and builds into a powerful chorus. Just vocal and piano. I know that is sparse info but I thought an arrangement as stirring as this one may be well known in more enlightened jazz circles. Any suggestions on how to find this piece?

Rob:

I ran a check through Tom Lord's Jazz Discography on CD-Rom and only around 9-10 versions of this song were listed, none of them seemed to feature just vocals and piano. It is possible that this was a private pressing done by a local artist, which would explain why it wasn't listed.

Dan Nissenbaum from Philadelphia, PA wrote:

I recently heard some rumours about a Clifford Brown bootleg series for Philology called "Brownie Eyes". I was wondering if you could tell me anything about it?

Dan:

I'm afraid I can't tell you much. The two volumes called 'Brownie's Eyes' issued by Phililogy seem to be out of print, and information about recording dates and personnel is sketchy. According to this link , Brown plays some piano in addition to trumpet on volume 2.
