Tenor saxophonist Walt Weiskopf has some big-time big-band cred, having worked and recorded with both Buddy Rich's Band (at 21) and then the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra when she made the move to New York from LA (circa'83) . But it's with smaller groups that he's left his mark, starting with a quartet in 1989 and working his way up to his current nonet, through a nice run of nine CDs (with seven on the Criss Cross label). His most recent recording is called “Siren”, and was released in September of 2000.

Bill Milkowski, a great distiller of jazz information, counted Walt among his "five most underrated players", and his 1997 CD, "Song for My Mother"(Criss Cross Jazz), was awarded four stars in Downbeat. Players of note appearing on his releases include Larry Goldings, Peter Bernstein , Bill Stewart, Drew Gress,Jim Snidero, Billy Drummond and his brother Joel, who is a fine pianist. He has appeared on over 30 other dates.

Walt is known for his compositional and aranging skills, as well as the conceptual individuality of his solo lines. He's shed light on this solo concept with a few highly recommended books, most notably his "Intervalic Improvisation", published by Aebersold. Check out Walt's ten for some clues as to where his inspiration is coming from right now, and head over to his website at www.waltweiskopf.com for more details.
