At 32, George Colligan has appeared on over 30 dates a sideman, and more importantly, nine of his own, on both the Steeplechase and Fresh Sounds labels, six of them since 2000. As our own Chris Hovan has noted (see: August 2001 Interview), "George Colligan has expanded the mainstream language in novel ways that distinguish him as one of the strongest new voices to come along in some time." Listeners who know those with which he has done time, such as Cassandra Wilson, Lonnie Plaxico, Gary Thomas, Ravi Coltrane, and David Gilmore, might deduce that one of the things that sets Colligan apart from the ivory brat pack is his considerable emphaisis and signature approach to the piano as a wonderfully rhythmic instrument. No surprise then that he 's quite capable of laying down the groove on drums as well. Believe it or not, he started out at the Peabody Conservatory as a classical trumpeter. He's a triple-threat on the keys as well, mixing it up on electric piano and B-3 as if with supple multistylistic mastery. His latest release is a duo with bassist Jesper Bodilsen, called ÃÂA WishÃÂ which was released in January by Steeplechase.
