The tuba is not a horn that you'll hear that often in a typical jazz ensemble, but when you do, it's memorable. Joseph Daley is one of the noted masters of that instruments, with a career that has seen him playing with artists from Anthony Braxton to Carla Bley to Jane Cortez to the Liberation Music Orchestra. He's just released The Tuba Chronicles Vol. 2 and it's one of the feature new albums in this edition of OMJ. Rising star bassist Michal Aftyka & quintet from Poland, Francisco Mela with Zoh Amba, and pianist Eva Novoa with Drew Gress & Devin Gray and guitarist Jeff Platz live in Berlin, are other new recordings sampled. There are also sincere tributes to the recently passed bassit/poet Larry Roland and pianist Les McCann, a guy I came to follow passionately through the '60s. You'll also hear an interpretation of a John Coltrane classic that will be part of an upcoming album by percussionist Ian Dogole.
