Paquito D'Rivera: Jazz Meets the Classics
Forte di una solida fama internazionale, il sassofonista cubano ci propone questo singolare CD ispirato dalla musica eurocolta. Dedicati ai più celebri compositori Bach, Mozart, Chopin) di tale tradizione, gli arrangiamenti mostrano la formazione classica del leader esaltandone il grande virtuosismo strumentale. Tanta è la tecnica messa in campo, dinanzi alla quale cedono il passo l'ispirazione e la forte tensione creativa.

Sin dalle prime note appare evidente il compiacimento tecnico, nel pur lodevole tentativo di aggiungere colori melodici afrocubani. I brani scorrono con piacevolezza ed uno squisito tocco jazzistico, ma non c'è nulla di più. Manca cioè una chiave di lettura originale che vada oltre il fascino evocativo ed estetizzante di una musica ben eseguita, ma senza pathos.

Impeccabilmente congegnato sul piano squisitamente tecnico-strumentale, questo progetto finisce con il privilegiare il virtuosismo a discapito del feeling. A conti fatti, prevale uno sterile sincretismo musicale fine a se stesso. C'è giustapposizione, senza adeguata trasfigurazione. Da un fuoriclasse come D'Rivera ci si attendeva un approccio più spericolato,anche se gli va dato atto di una curiosità volatile in costante fermento.
