Jamie Baum: In This Life
Oltre che valente flautista Jamie Baum è anche prolifica e interessante compositrice, arte che ha modo di modellare e sperimentare nelle sue diverse formazioni. Il settetto è l'ensemble di più lunga data (è in vita da quattordici anni e si sono avvicendati musicisti come Vijay Iyer, Drew Gress, Shane Endsley, per citarne alcuni) e quello che meglio esprime la ricchezza espressiva di Ms. Baum.

Flessibilità da combo e tavolozza timbrica da piccola orchestra, sono le armi utilizzate in questo In This Life disco ispirato in gran parte alla musica indiana e alla figura di Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn, cantante e musicista pakistano prematuramente scomparso nel 1997.

Baum è musicista raffinata che si guarda bene da ricreare atmosfere esotiche in una contaminazione superficiale con l'idioma jazzistico. Ci troviamo così di fronte a composizioni dal gusto vagamente retrò, di ampio respiro a prescindere dalla loro durata, con grande attenzione agli impasti timbrici e nelle quali sono i movimenti di insieme a prevalere sui pur pregevoli interventi solistici.
