Devo confessare che—pur nel rispetto delle opinione di tutti e ben consapevole che il percorso artistico di Vijay Iyer possa anche non piacere—ho trovato estremamente ingenerosi, talvolta ai limiti della stupidità, molti commenti negativi e invidiosi che si sono susseguiti nei social networks all'indomani della vittoria del pianista della prestigiosa [e soprattutto pecuniariamente corposa] MacArthur Grant.

Se c'è infatti un musicista che in questi anni ha dimostrato di avere una statura culturale degna di un importante riconoscimento, questo è certamente Iyer, artista e intellettuale di straordinaria sensibilità e le cui progettualità riflettono in modo tutt'altro che banale su molti aspetti della società contemporanea, innervando la propria musica di una capacità dialogica declinata lungo le tematiche dell'urgenza identitaria.

Il lavoro fatto con il produttore e MC Mike Ladd in questi anni ne è una prova tangibile e artisticamente notevole, come dimostra Holding It Down: The Veterans' Dreams Project, terzo capitolo di un progetto dal forte senso politico iniziato con il capolavoro del 2004 In What Language? [correte a recuperarlo se non lo conoscete, è un disco davvero fondamentale] e proseguito tre anni dopo con Still Life with Commentator.
L'America del post 11 Settembre torna anche qui: il nuovo disco esplora infatti le esperienze dei veterani neri delle guerre in Iraq e Afghanistan attraverso i loro sogni. Intervistati da Ladd e da Patricia McGregor, i soldati hanno fatto emergere dal loro sonno angosce, storie, incubi, fantasie, che Ladd ha poi plasmato in testi potenti supportati dalle musiche di Iyer.

Ossessivo, urbano, visionario. Bellissimo. Il disco trova, oltre che nella scura declamazione di Ladd, la forza vocale di due veterani protagonisti come Maurice Dacaul [scrittore che ha servito le forze armate in Iraq] e Lynn Hill, pilota di droni in Afghanistan da una base nel Nevada. Un crescendo di tensione espressiva che culmina nella conclusiva "Mess Hall" che fa riverberare il concetto di "casa" in un'angosciante quanto splendida ipnosi verbale.

Musica che interroga il presente, che dialoga in modo poetico ma sempre pragmatico con le istanze politiche così come con la meraviglia dell'invenzione artistica.
Non c'è dubbio. Vijay Iyer il MacArthur se l'è meritato eccome. Non serviva certo Holding It Down: The Veterans' Dreams Project, ma una conferma di questo livello è sempre una meraviglia.
