| John Zorn's 50th Anniversary by Peter Gannushkin

A photo exhibit of the 50-th anniversary celebration of John Zorn sounds almost like oxymoron. Well, at least it used to sound like that not so long ago. These days, however, we can find plenty of interviews with the mysterious musician, composer, band leader and producer as well a numerous fan sites, discussions, CD reviews and so on and so forth. The thirty day long festival in one the hottest spots of New York's downtown scene - the Tonic - was crowded for the whole month of September. It was exactly ten years since such an event took place in the city and again all possible sides of John Zorn's art were demonstrated: improvisations and concert works, game pieces and chamber compositions, and famous bands. Everything was there. There were several world premiers, quite a few reincarnations of old projects and, of course, all varieties of infamous Masada. This short collection of photos is just an attempt to catch the moment of the creation of the art, the real art. There is no way to substitute the music itself, but at least you can see the faces of those who are responsible for our excitement.
